Gold scrap (lom) price today: how buy-back quotes are calculated

What gold scrap (lom) is, how buy-back prices form in Armenia, why they sit below the official XAU rate and how to value your gold before selling.

UpdatedJuly 10, 2026

People searching for “gold scrap price” or “vosku gin lom” are usually preparing to sell jewelry, a broken piece or inherited gold. With scrap, you are paid for the metal, not the jewelry.

A scrap buy-back price is always anchored to the official pure-gold value, but it never equals it. This article explains where the gap comes from and how not to lose more than necessary.

What counts as gold scrap

Scrap is any gold a buyer accepts as metal, regardless of the item's form: broken or outdated jewelry, a single earring, a damaged chain, dental gold.

When scrap is valued, only two things matter: weight and hallmark. Design, brand and craftsmanship do not count toward a scrap price.

How the scrap price is formed

The calculation starts from the official CBA XAU rate — the price of 1 gram of pure 999 gold. From it comes the estimated value of your hallmark: for 585, the official number is multiplied by 0.585.

The buyer then subtracts their discount — the margin — from that estimated value. The size of this discount is what separates a good offer from a bad one: the smaller the gap from the calculated baseline, the better the price for you.

Why scrap prices sit below the official rate

  • The buyer prices in verification and melting costs
  • Margin — business income and risk coverage
  • Hallmark uncertainty risk when the stamp is old or missing
  • A liquidity buffer: the price can move before the metal is resold
  • Weight deductions for stones, springs and non-gold parts

How to value your gold before selling

  • Confirm the hallmark — check the stamp (585, 750, 999)
  • Weigh the item, or ask for it to be weighed in front of you
  • Multiply the weight by the same-day per-gram estimate for your hallmark on voskugin.am
  • That number is your negotiation baseline: a buy-back offer will be below it, but the gap should be reasonable
  • Compare offers from at least 2-3 buyers: a bank, a pawnshop, a jeweler

Where gold scrap is accepted

In Armenia, scrap is accepted by banks, pawnshops, jewelry workshops and market buyers. Each has its own margin and terms: pawnshops are usually faster, banks more predictable.

Whoever you sell to, the reference point is always the same: the same-day official XAU baseline. If an offer is far from it, keep looking.
